Two of the best high school teams in the country met on the field in one of this year’s most exciting games so far. Ranked 2nd in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, Indiana’s Culver Academy traveled down to Maryland to face 5th ranked Gilman.
The Eagles had an advantage over Gilman early in the game, taking a 7-4 lead into halftime.
In an intense second half, both teams battled back and forth with excellent lacrosse on both sides of the ball. With under four minutes to go, Gilman’s Will McBride tied the game at 10, the first time the Greyhounds were on equal terms with Culver since early in the first quarter.
Keeping their cool, the Eagles responded minutes later when Dawson McKenzie netted his third goal of the game with 2:25 remaining in the game. The midfielder’s goal would be the game winner with Culver taking an 11-10 victory.
McKenzie’s three goals were not the only hat trick for Culver. Riley Thompson and Ethan Walker both scored three goals and two assists. Joel Tinney added on the remaining two goals, picking up an assist along the way.
Marking Gilman’s first loss, this game drops the Greyhounds down to 2-1 this season.
Meanwhile, Culver advances to 5-0. The Eagles will stay in Maryland for games against Mount St. Joseph on March 26 and 3rd ranked McDonogh on March 27.
